Bug in Line Chart Horizontal Axis?

I have a line chart showing dates on the horizontal axis and dollar amounts on the vertical axis.  I am trying to get the minor gridlines for the horizontal axis to show every 3 months, and the major gridlines to show every year.  Here's what I did:  I set
the major unit on the horizontal axis to one year, the minor unit to 3 months, and made sure to check "Date Axis".  When I select "Major and Minor Gridlines" from the ribbon (Layout/Gridlines/Primary Vertical Gridlines), only the major gridlines show up. 
Strangely, if I select only "Minor Gridlines", then the minor gridlines show up.  I can't get the major and minor gridlines to show up at the same time.  Is this a bug or a feature?  My dates go from Jan 1, 2008 to Jan 1, 2014.  I'm using Excel 2007 SP2, Windows
XP SP3.  The minor tick marks do show up, so I know the scale is doing what I want it to.

Not sure it's a bug as such, more a case of it does not like mixing period sizes for the major and minor unit.
Try this instead.
Apply both major and minor gridlines.
Format the Major unit to be 12 months and format the Minor unit to be 3 months.
Both should now appear and can be formatted differently.
