Black Screen after updating to Windows 8.1

I have a HP Pavilion 17-e098nr Notebook PC, updated to Windows 8.1, immediately after restarting upon completing the 8.1 installation, a message appeared briefly mentioning a problme with a power driver.
It did not stay on the screen long enough for
me to get the complete message.

The computer then automatically restarted to a black screen.
There is no cursor or mouse pointer, nothing appears on the screen at all while attempting to bootup (no options to enter BIOS etc).
I have attempted to restart in safe mode using F8, F9,
Del and none of these options bring up any start options.
I have also restarted with a USB media for Windows 8.1, but get nothing but the black screen .

I can not get into the BIOS to ensure the computer will boot from the USB media first. I even tried restarting the computer with an external
monitor, but that did not work either.

I'm sure that if I can get into safe mode, I can disable the video driver, but can not get into safe mode using any key combination.

Does anyone have any suggestions.
