D drive back-up

My "D" drive is full and asking for a backup.
I can't use a restore point as I've never backed up the drive before. I was in the process of doing so, I noticed that a large majority of the files shouldn't have been on D drive, things like photos, documents,
etc.
The USB I'm using should have enough space but because of all the files, it doesn't and therefore, backup has failed.
Please tell me what I'm doing wrong to be saving things to the D drive.
If I delete files from D drive will they remain accessible on my computer? Would the stuff be saved in C as well as D or do I lose all of my photos etc.

By looking at the list of files contained in D drive I can't tell what they are and whether or not I can delete them.
I'm guessing that I have to delete most of them but how to know which ones? As is, I can't download Windows Updates.
I don't know what other
implications a full D drive might have.

I would suggest you to use Disk cleanup utility to educe the number of unnecessary files on your hard disk to free up disk space.
Delete files using

Boot in Safe Mode:

• Open Run command as previously described
• Type MSConfig
• Click on Boot tab
• Tick Safe boot in Boot option
• Select Network
• Click Apply and OK
• Reboot your system

Your system will boot in Safe mode with Networking. You may now try and open Windows Store and should not see any errors.
