Problem with IE 8, MS Update and may be missing files on XP

Since installing, I can't print from sites like Monster.  When I go to MS Update, I get an error "can't write to memory", same error trying to install Adobe 9.  I seem to be missing files regsvr32msscript.ocx, dispex.dll, vbscript.dll and scrrunn.dll (files
associated with JS extensions)

I uninstalled and reinstalled IE 8 but didn't fix.

Here's what I'd recommend:

Back-up any personal data (none of which should be considered 100% trustworthy at this point) then do a format & clean install of Windows.  Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT fix this!

Run CHKDSK

• Go to the Start button.
• In the Search box, type "cmd" (without quotes) and press Enter.
• At the command prompt, type "chkdsk /r /f" (without quotes) and press Enter.
• Restart your computer.
