Windows 8 Windows Update fails to download updates

I've just bought a new windows 8 PC.
Only had it a few days and barely used it, but already plauged with issues.
One of these problems is that asking Windows Defender to download updates fails at about the 1/3rd mark every time.
It sits at that point for
a long time and eventually throws an obsure error code.

Boot in Safe Mode:

• Open Run command as previously described
• Type MSConfig
• Click on Boot tab
• Tick Safe boot in Boot option
• Select Network
• Click Apply and OK
• Reboot your system

Your system will boot in Safe mode with Networking. You may now try and open Windows Store and should not see any errors.
